Purpose Blur

Mental Health

«Purpose Blur» is a personal project in which to interpret, reinterpret and represent social anxiety and panic attacks I used the long exposure technique in the context of street photography.

After experiencing panic attacks and social anxiety caused by the end of quarantines in the Covid-19 pandemic, I planned this project that sought to describe the sensation caused by these mental disorders.
These episodes appear suddenly and are based on fears and apparent dangers, which are not imminent. Short duration but a strong sensation.
This intimate and personal project was developed through analog photography, with a long shutter photographic technique and with «dirty» processes throughout its development. I bought Fujifilm film rolls; Fuji Eterna 500T, Fuji Eterna Vivid 160T and Fuji Super F 250T and I loaded them in a 35mm canister for reflex cameras. Pushed to 400, 800 and even 1600 iso and developed in a cross-process for b&w without respecting classic development times or conventions.

The idea in the whole process was to relive these episodes of fear and let myself be carried away by those memories. To exemplify the above, the agitation of the developing tank was abrupt and with random rest times. All guided by reminiscent emotional states causing images with high contrast and excess grain, just as I think I have felt in crisis episodes.
All the places are photographed where I have ever experienced these sensations: public transport, commuting to work, driving my car, seeing my shadow, or simply being outside.

I took all of the above as a psychological exercise, through photography, to let out those new emotions for me, heal them and at the same time have fun with the whole analogous process.
